18 Top WAEC Rules WASSCE and BECE Candidates Need Know

Every year, candidates sitting for the WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination) and BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination) must abide by strict rules set by WAEC (West African Examinations Council).

These rules are crucial not only for maintaining the integrity of the exams but also for ensuring candidates do not face disqualification. Here are 18 top WAEC rules candidates must never forget:

1. Follow the Timetable: Stick to the official timetable. Missing a paper without a valid reason could cost you your certificate.

2. No Mobile Phones Allowed / No Electronic Device: Bringing mobile phones or any electronic devices into the exam hall is strictly prohibited.

3. Report on Time: Candidates must arrive at the exam venue at least 30 minutes before the paper starts.

4. Valid ID and Index Number Required:

Always carry your WAEC-issued index number and any required identification.

5. Use Only Approved Materials:

Only WAEC-approved calculators, mathematical sets, and stationery are allowed.

6. No Writing Before the Start Signal: Candidates must not open or write on the answer booklet until instructed by the supervisor.

7. Silence in the Exam Hall: Silence must be maintained throughout the examination. Talking to another candidate is forbidden.

8. No Impersonation: Sitting for an exam on behalf of someone else is a criminal offense.

9. No External Help: Receiving help from supervisors, invigilators, or outsiders is considered malpractice.

10. Avoid Bringing Notes: Carrying written notes or unauthorized materials into the hall is strictly prohibited.

11. Answer Only What Is Required: Stick to the number of questions required. Over-answering may lead to penalties.

13. No Borrowing of Items: Sharing or borrowing materials like pens, rulers, or erasers is not allowed during the exam.

14. Observe the Exam Format: Follow instructions on question papers, including sections to answer and time allocation.

15. Do Not Mutilate Exam Materials: Tearing pages from answer booklets or question papers is a punishable offense.

16. Sit in Your Assigned Seat: Candidates must sit according to the seating arrangement to avoid confusion or suspicion.

17. Submit Answer Booklets Properly: Candidates must stop writing immediately when the time is up and submit their work accordingly

18. Obey Invigilators: Follow all instructions given by supervisors and invigilators. Disrespect can lead to penalties.

Abiding by these rules is essential. Any breach could result in cancellation of results or being barred from future exams. WAEC takes integrity seriously—and so should every candidate.
