GPRTU Officially Releases Chart for New Transport Fares
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), in collaboration with the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), has released a new fare chart following a 15% reduction in transport fares. This new pricing is set to take effect on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
This press statement comes as a relief to many Ghanaians, especially regular commuters, students, and traders who always rely on commercial transport daily basis.
The fare reduction comes after the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar, which has led to a decrease in fuel prices and other related costs.
According to GPRTU, the new fare chart was carefully calculated to reflect the 15% drop while ensuring that drivers can still operate fairly.
In order to make things more comfortable and easier for passengers and transport operators, the figures have been rounded up or down to the nearest 50 pesewas. For instance, if the previous fare was GH¢11.00, it will now be GH¢9.50 based on the new chart.
Transport authorities explained that rounding the fares helps maintain clarity and avoids confusion, especially for passengers who pay with coins or mobile money. The new fare chart will be posted in all commercial vehicles across the country to ensure transparency.
Abass Imoro, the Industrial Relations Officer of GPRTU, urged all drivers to strictly follow the new fares and warned against any attempts to overcharge passengers. He also added that transport unions will be monitoring compliance closely.
Passengers across the country have welcomed the decision and are happy to see some economic relief. Many hope this reduction will also lower the prices of goods in the markets, since transportation costs play a key role in pricing.
Now that new chart now out, Ghanaians can prepare to enjoy cheaper fares starting this weekend.
