Binduri Township: Fear grip BECE candidates over gunshots near examination centre

Tensions remain high in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region following heavy gunfire at the Binduri township near Sarabogo, where the BECE exam centre is located.

The attack, which reportedly began on June 7 at 10:00pm, is said to have been carried out by the two feuding factions in the area.

As a result, the situation in Binduri is deteriorating, with many offices not operational, some shops remaining closed, and reduced movement of people in the town.

Candidates of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) are gripped by fear as sporadic gunshots continue to echo from the conflict zone.

From June 7 to June 11, 2025, a community Chief, his Wife, and others were injured, and 5 people were killed, making a total of 8 within 4 days.

Students and teachers are scared about the development and have called for a security presence in the exam center.

The situation has made some parents resist their children participating in the ongoing BECE exams for fear of their wards being attacked or k!lled, but some of the headteachers were able to convince some parents but had to hire a bus to convey them to and fro to the school.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant as efforts are being made to de-escalate the situation.
