C/R: Headteachers urged to collaborate for quality inclusive education—Dr. (Mrs.) Juliette Dufie Otami

Dr. (Mrs.) Juliette Dufie Otami

The first Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) was held at Cape Coast in the central region on June 4, 2025. With the theme "Transforming School, Touching Life, and the Role of Teachers in the 21st Century,"

Dr. (Mrs.) Juliette Dufie Otami, the Central Regional Director of Education, urges all head teachers across the country to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders to promote quality and inclusive education in schools.

As a headteacher, you are playing a key role in making sure that no child is left behind and also helping to shape the future of our children in our country.

Dr.Juliette Dufie-Otami emphasizes that inclusive education — which ensures all children, regardless of physical ability, background, or learning needs, have equal access to quality education — can only be achieved through teamwork.

Speaking at a recent educational workshop, she highlighted that the essence of your school largely depends on you and your leadership. Set the tone for learning and discipline, and grow a strong leader who brings out the best in their staff and students.

She further praises the headteacher for how far their commitment with GES is up to date.

In today's world, it is important to promote teamwork among your teachers. When teachers work together, they are able to support each other and improve the quality of teaching.

However, let's encourage collaboration in creating an enabling environment that accommodates every learner or where everyone feels valued.

Professor Rosemary Seiwah Bosu

Prof. Rosemary Seiwah Bosu, an educational leader at the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA), also stresses that we have to bear in mind that education has changed and is no longer what it used to be 20 or 10 years ago.

The 21st century has brought new challenges as well as opportunities, including technology, globalization, diversity, learning needs, and evolving social expectations.

In education we learned new things every day; now education is involving the expectation of jobs that are changing rapidly.

The education system, therefore, needs to place greater emphasis on enabling individuals to become lifelong learners so that they keep up with the changes we have to manage complex ways of thinking and complex ways of working that computers cannot take over easily.

Mr. Issah Osu

Mr. Issah Osu, the outgoing chairperson of the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS), urged GES to reform the position of headteachers due to security reasons and agency.

GES should structure the position of headteachers to make it attractive; the headteachers are the most important and well-recognized of all the positions in GES, he added.

"I have encountered situations where headteachers are told by the directors that they are at the mercy of their pens, which sometimes means offenses are magnified and attacked in civilian form, the intimidation threatening and castigating from officers." Mr. Issah said

He further highlighted that the event lowered the rank of the headteacher, which is a matter of concern. These negative tendencies undermine the confidence and the authority of the headteacher, and this creates disaffection. GES should outline clear policy on the conduct of examinations and their financing, where some people always go through stress.

Mrs. Philomena Charlotte Forson

The incoming COHBS chairperson, Philomena Charlotte Forson, commented that "I would like to collaborate with my colleagues, headteachers, and metropolis directors at GES to improve the status of education in Cape Coast Metropolis, and I also hope to transform our schools and bring creativity to higher standards.

Queen Mother, Nana Amba Eyiaba

The Queen Mother of Effutu Municipal District in the Central Region, Nana Amba Eyiaba, concluded by advising headteachers to enhance themselves by transforming and empowering themselves in order to achieve the education standards for all in the country.
