Despite frantic efforts from bystanders and the timely arrival of the Ghana National Fire Service, the flames proved too fierce. By the time the fire was brought under control, nothing had been salvaged.
According to the eyewitnesses, the fire moved with frightening speed, giving shop owners no chance to retrieve merchandise, cash, or even personal belongings.
Some rushed to the scene barefoot, still in sleepwear, only to watch helplessly as their sources of livelihood crumbled in the heat.
The charred remains of cosmetics, stationery, food items, electronics, and student supplies told the story of small dreams gone up in smoke.
Although no casualties were reported, the emotional and economic toll on the affected traders is immeasurable. Most of the shop owners are local residents and campus dependents, relying on daily sales to feed their families and pay school fees. With nothing insured and no contingency measures in place, many now face financial ruin.
Preliminary investigations by the Fire Service point to a possible electrical fault, though a full forensic assessment is underway.
The scene has since been cordoned off as authorities inspect the damage and engage with victims.
Student leaders have joined calls for immediate intervention, appealing to the university management and local government to provide temporary relief for those affected.
Some are also demanding improved safety protocols for market areas near educational institutions, citing frequent overcrowding, faulty wiring, and poor emergency access.
As the smoke clears, one thing remains: the resilience of those who watched their livelihoods vanish in minutes. But resilience alone won’t rebuild the stalls. For now, ashes tell the story of shattered hustle and urgent need.
