Ghana Secures €5 Million Grant from Italy to Strengthen TVET Sector and Empower Youth.

Italy Grants €5 Million to Ghana to Boost TVET and Empower Young People

Ghana has taken an adventurous step to transform its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector with a fresh injection of €5 million from the Italian government.

This funding is part of the Revitalizing Institutions for Skills Enhancement (RISE) project, aimed at elevating the quality and reach of vocational education. By investing in practical skills development, Ghana is preparing its youth to meet the demands of a rapidly changing job market and to become key players in the country’s economic growth.

The grant will be managed collaboratively by Ghana’s Ministry of Education and the Commission for TVET (CTVET). Its primary goal is to upgrade vocational training centers and institutions nationwide by focusing on practical, hands-on skills that directly meet the needs of industries and the job market. This effort is aimed at producing a workforce equipped with the necessary competencies to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s socio-economic development.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has emphasized the important role that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) plays in combating the ongoing issue of youth unemployment in the country.

According to the minister, investing in vocational education is key to nurturing a generation of skilled entrepreneurs who can create jobs and drive economic growth. He emphasized that the grant will help enhance the capacity of TVET institutions to deliver quality training that aligns with global standards.

In addition to financial support, the minister has directed the Ghana TVET Service and the Policy Planning Directorate to spearhead a rebranding campaign for the TVET sector. This initiative seeks to transform public perception, positioning vocational education as a valuable and attractive pathway for young people seeking career success. The rebranding effort aims to showcase TVET as a dynamic, innovative sector that offers diverse opportunities beyond traditional academic routes.

The grant and the associated initiatives have garnered strong support from influential stakeholders, including Engineer Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe and Sebastian Fred Deh, Chair of the TVET Council. Their endorsement highlights a shared commitment to strengthening the TVET framework and ensuring that the sector can meet the evolving demands of Ghana’s economy.

Stakeholder engagement

Overall, the €5 million grant from Italy represents a critical investment in Ghana’s future, one that promises to uplift the TVET sector and equip young Ghanaians with the skills and knowledge necessary for success. This partnership reflects a growing recognition of the importance of vocational training as a driver of sustainable development and economic empowerment in Ghana.
