Pregnant BECE Candidate Gives Birth to Baby Boy during Exam
A pregnant student writing the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has safely delivered a baby boy at an examination centre during her ICT paper in the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at the Asenua Presbyterian Junior High School Examination Centre in Mamponteng, located in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
According to reports, a policewoman escorting the candidate to the washroom on the first day of the examination noticed signs of distress. Upon entering the facility, she discovered that the student was already in labour.
A teacher at the examination center, Mr. Desmond Adjei, speaking to Ultimate 106.9 FM that the student was quickly moved to the headmaster’s office, where she successfully delivered a bouncing baby boy.
Mr. Adjei further disclosed to reporter Ivan Heathcote–Fumador that the pastor of the Asenua Presbyterian Church stepped in to assist. He transported both the new mother and her baby in his vehicle to Victory Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
The candidate’s name and school have been withheld to protect her privacy, but sources say arrangements are being made to allow her to continue writing the rest of her examination papers under medical supervision.
The incident has sparked conversations around teenage pregnancy, student welfare, and the unique challenges some candidates face while writing national exams.
The young candidate from Asenua has not only delivered a baby but also delivered a powerful message of perseverance to the nation: that pregnancy should never mark the end of a girl's education.
