Ablekuma North Rerun: GJA condemns assault on journalist and seeks justice

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the assault on two journalists covering the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on July 11, 2025.

According to a press statement, the GJA described the attacks as “brutal and unprovoked,” highlighting incidents involving Kwabena Agyekum Banahene of EIB Network and Salomey Nartey of JoyNews.

However, Banahene was reportedly slapped by a police officer while performing his duties, despite clearly identifying himself as a journalist. Nartey was assaulted by unidentified individuals.

“This egregious act is a direct assault on press freedom and a blatant disregard for the rule of law,” the GJA said.

The Association commended the Ghana Police Service for swiftly interdicting the officer involved but insisted on a thorough and transparent investigation.

It also urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure the prosecution of the officer to send a strong signal against such acts of impunity.

“The safety and security of journalists are paramount. Any threat to them is a direct threat to freedom of expression and the integrity of our democratic processes,” the statement added.

The GJA reaffirmed its solidarity with the affected journalists and pledged its support to ensure justice is served.
