Bolgatanga Technical Institute shut down indefinitely after violent student riot leaves six injured.

The Bolgatanga Technical Institute in the Upper East Region has been shut down indefinitely following a violent student disturbance that erupted in the early hours of Friday, August 15, 2025.

The chaos, which left six students severely injured and several school properties destroyed, prompted the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to close the school to restore calm and allow for thorough investigations.

According to security sources, the violence broke out around 12:30 a.m. when some angry students began pelting stones and vandalizing school property. By the time police patrol teams arrived at the scene, the school library and the senior housemaster’s office were already engulfed in flames.

The Ghana National Fire Service was called in and managed to bring the fire under control. However, the school’s library, the senior housemaster’s office, chairs, storeroom doors, and other property were vandalized beyond recognition.

The unrest reportedly stemmed from the suspension of six students by school authorities a week earlier for misconduct. Security sources said that on the night of August 14, around 10:00 p.m., friends of the suspended students allegedly mobilized and invited their colleagues back to the school. The group then launched an attack in protest of the disciplinary action taken by school management.

During the incident, six students sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital for medical attention. Police officers have since visited the injured students.

Police personnel have restored order on campus and are maintaining a strong presence to ensure the safe evacuation of remaining students.

Meanwhile, six students believed to have led the violent protest and arson are currently wanted by the Ghana Police Service to assist in ongoing investigations.
