GES suspends Nkwanta SHS headmaster over public plea to feed WASSCE candidates
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has, with immediate effect, suspended the headmaster of Nkwanta Senior High School (SHS), Solomon Sarpong Bagmae.
This comes after an urgent appeal he made for public support to provide food for the school’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates.
The suspension was announced in a statement issued by the Acting Oti Regional Director of Education, Irene Jacquelina Attabra, who said Mr. Bagmae’s appeal was made without prior approval.
According to the press statement, the suspension will allow for an independent and impartial investigation into the matter.
The headmaster has been directed to hand over all school property and administrative duties to the Regional Director of Education and to refrain from making public comments while the probe is ongoing.
The appeal followed a surge in candidate numbers across three schools in the area, attributed to the ongoing conflict, which has disrupted normal life and supply chains. This has posed severe challenges to school operations, particularly food provision.
Mr. Bagmae expressed concern for the well-being of students preparing for their final examinations, stating that the increased candidate population had overwhelmed the school’s food supply—a situation that could negatively affect students’ concentration and performance.
