CETAG Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unpaid NLC Arbitral Award

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has issued a strong warning to the government, threatening a nationwide strike if outstanding allowances and components of the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) arbitral award are not fully implemented by the end of October 2025.

According to CETAG, the government has failed to honour the NLC’s binding award issued in May 2023, which covered key compensation and conditions-of-service issues for teacher-educators.

The association cites several unpaid allowances, including the 2023/2024 Book and Research Allowance, the top-up of the 2022 allowance for Akrokerri College staff, and compensation for all-year-round academic work done in 2022 across 39 colleges.

CETAG stressed that the arbitral award is not optional and accused authorities of neglecting repeated appeals to resolve the matter.

The group warned that if the government fails to meet its obligations by October 31, 2025, it will issue an official strike notice on November 7, leading to a nationwide industrial action across all 46 public colleges of education.

The association insists the strike will continue “until the last pesewa owed is paid.” It also cautioned that such action could disrupt the 2025/2026 academic calendar, affecting teacher training and student learning across the country.

CETAG has called on the government to act swiftly to avert the strike and restore trust between teacher-educators and state authorities. So far, the government has not formally responded to the association’s latest ultimatum.
