WAEC confirms digital transition for May/June 2026 WASSCE
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially announced its preparation for a full digital transition and Computer-Based Testing (CBT) format for school candidates sitting for the May/June 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
This pivotal development was confirmed during the recent WAEC State Committee meeting hosted by the Lagos state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education on October 11, 2025.
The zonal coordinator for WAEC, Mr. Rafiu Atoyebi, informed the Lagos state delegation about the council’s insistence on the transition, noting that the new Computer-Based WASSCE will be a hybrid format.
“Computer-Based WASSCE is the way to go. It is the future of examinations,” Mr. Atoyebi stated.
He added that the full transition is a core part of WAEC’s strategy to eliminate logistics bottlenecks, enhance examination credibility and drastically reduce incidents of examination malpractices.
The new exams will be held at existing JAMB-accredited centers, with a pilot programme for selected subjects to precede the full rollout.
The announcement comes amidst “fears of stakeholders about the nation’s readiness,” especially following technical glitches that affected the release of the 2025 WASSCE results.
However, Mr. Atoyebi moved to allay these concerns, particularly those surrounding internet connectivity for candidates in rural areas. He gave an assurance that every registered candidate will be able to write the examination, whether the exam is held “onshore or offshore.”
The meeting, chaired by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, also saw the Lagos state government reaffirm its zero tolerance for examination malpractice. Mr. Alli-Balogun insisted that all contraventions and necessary sanctions must be communicated to schools through the ministry.
