GES Confirms Ghana’s Return to International WASSCE Beginning May/June 2026

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced a major shift in the country’s secondary education assessment system, confirming that Ghana will rejoin the international West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) starting May/June 2026.

This marks a departure from the Ghana-only WASSCE timetable introduced under the previous administration.

According to the GES, the decision aims to restore uniformity and enhance regional competitiveness among students across West Africa. By participating in the international exam once again, Ghanaian candidates will write the same papers, on the same schedule, as their counterparts in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia.

Education officials explained that returning to the standardized West African calendar will not only improve alignment with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) protocols but also address long-standing concerns from stakeholders who argued that the Ghana-only format created disparities in exam timelines and result release periods.

The GES emphasizes that this transition will provide Ghanaian students with a fairer platform for comparison, especially for those seeking opportunities across the sub-region or applying to institutions outside the country. It also promises smoother coordination in areas such as exam security, marking, and certification.

Preparations are expected to begin early in 2025 to ensure schools adapt to the restored calendar. Teachers, students, and parents will be engaged extensively to guarantee a smooth rollout ahead of the May/June 2026 exams.

With this decision, Ghana reaffirms its commitment to regional educational integration and standardized assessment—steps many educators believe will strengthen the country’s academic reputation across West Africa.
