Tamale: 3 suspects arrested for dealing in drugs (Click to See Photos)

Three suspected drug peddlers are in police custody in Tamale following a special operation by the IGP’s Special Operations Team.

The suspects were arrested during routine patrols aimed at clamping down on drug trafficking and other criminal activities within the metropolis.

The arrests were made on December 15, 2025, during a sustained security operation by the IGP Special Operations Team in the Tamale Metropolis.

A total of fifty-one officers, led by ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil, were deployed for the exercise, supported by nine service vehicles, including an armored vehicle and a Black Maria.

The operation formed part of broader efforts to prevent crimes such as robbery, theft, drug peddling, rape, and attacks on businesses in the region.

The operation began at Kalpohini, a suburb of Tamale, where officers on patrol spotted a woman later identified as Aisha standing beside a young man on a motorbike. Upon seeing the security team, the rider fled the scene, abandoning the woman.

A search conducted on the suspect led to the retrieval of six sachets of opioid drugs, popularly known as tramadol, along with an unregistered motorbike found in her possession.

Further checks revealed that Aisha operated a provision shop in the area. A search at the shop led to the arrest of another young woman, Asia, who told officers she was assisting in running the business. Although no illegal items were found at the shop, she was picked up as an accomplice.

The team later moved to Aisha’s residence, where a further search uncovered quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

During interrogation, Aisha mentioned an intermediary known as Hawabu as the link between her and the supplier of the drugs. The suspect subsequently led the team to Hawabu, who failed to produce the alleged main distributor and was arrested. A search at her residence, however, yielded no incriminating items.

All three suspects, Aisha, Asia, and Hawabu were transported to the Sakasaka Police Station, where they are being held to assist investigations. The seized opioid drugs, suspected Indian hemp, and the unregistered motorbike have been handed over to the police for forensic examination and safekeeping.

The Special Operations Team later extended the patrols to the Tamale township, markets, and taxi ranks, where no further criminal activity was recorded.

Police say the operation ended without casualties and underscores their commitment to keeping the Tamale Metropolis safe, while urging the public to support ongoing efforts to combat drug peddling and other crimes.
