Education Minister announces financial clearance to recruit 7,000 teachers and 1,200 university lecturers.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the Ministry has obtained financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance to recruit at least 7,000 teachers drawn from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 cohorts of trained graduates.

The recruitment forms part of the government’s broader strategy to address the persistent shortage of teachers in basic and second-cycle schools nationwide. For years, many trained teachers within these cohorts have remained unemployed, awaiting posting and absorption into the Ghana Education Service.

In addition, Mr. Iddrisu revealed that public universities have been granted approval to recruit 1,200 lecturers to strengthen academic staffing and enhance the quality of tertiary education across the country.

The announcement comes at a time of heightened concern over staffing gaps, particularly in rural and underserved communities, where some schools continue to operate with inadequate teaching personnel. Education advocacy groups, including Africa Education Watch, have consistently called for urgent interventions to prevent further deterioration in learning outcomes.

The planned recruitment is expected to ease the backlog of unemployed trained teachers while helping to fill critical vacancies in public schools. In recent months, members of the 2023 and 2024 cohorts have voiced frustration over delays in recruitment and salary payments for those already posted.

The Minister’s announcement underscores the government’s renewed commitment to addressing human resource challenges within the education sector. Earlier projections had indicated plans for large-scale recruitment in 2025, but actual intake figures were scaled down due to fiscal constraints.

Meanwhile, the approval to recruit additional lecturers is set to relieve pressure on universities, many of which have struggled to replace retiring staff or expand faculty in recent years.
