Education Minister Directs GTEC to Withdraw Post-Retirement Contract Letters
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to immediately withdraw its letters regarding post-retirement contracts for senior academic staff in public universities.
The directive affects letters issued on September 30 and October 1, 2025, and follows a meeting between the minister and leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), who raised concerns over the communication and implications of the policy.
In a statement released on Monday, April 27, and signed by the minister's press secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the ministry explained that the withdrawal is to allow for broader consultations with key stakeholders before any final decision is made.
“The decision has been taken pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any policy direction reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector,” the statement noted.
The Ministry emphasized that the move is part of efforts to ensure that policies affecting higher education are thoroughly reviewed and widely accepted prior to implementation. It reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent, inclusive, and consultative approach in addressing issues within the tertiary education space.
