GES Closes Recruitment Portal After 40,000 Applications for 7,000 Teaching Positions — Haruna Iddrisu
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that the recent teacher recruitment exercise attracted an overwhelming response, with over 40,000 applicants competing for just 7,000 available positions.
Speaking on the sidelines of the eLearning Africa programme, he noted that despite the country’s significant teacher shortage, financial clearance was granted for only 7,000 recruits.
He assured that the selection process will be strictly merit-based, with preference given to the most qualified candidates.
The recruitment portal has since been closed to ease pressure on the system and to allow for a smooth and efficient review of applications.
According to the Minister, the education sector has the capacity to absorb up to 50,000 teachers if adequate resources were available. However, current financial limitations make this unfeasible.
He explained that the Ministry of Education secured approval from the Ministry of Finance specifically for the recruitment of 7,000 teachers, which was publicly advertised in a transparent manner.
Mr. Iddrisu further indicated that the portal was closed after applications reached 40,000 to maintain order and efficiency. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a rigorous and objective selection process, assuring all applicants of fairness, transparency, and due diligence throughout the exercise.
