Cost of Study: Education Programmes in Selected Public Universities in Ghana
The cost of pursuing education-related programmes in Ghana’s Public Universities continues to draw attention as provisional fees for the 2025/2026 academic year reveal notable variations across institutions. While the government maintains subsidized rates for regular students, the overall financial burden on students and families remains significant.
At the University of Ghana (UG), regular freshmen pursuing a B.A. or B.Sc. in Education are expected to pay between approximately GHS 2,598 and GHS 3,362.
However, distance education and fee-paying options can rise well above GHS 5,000, highlighting the cost differences between study modes.
Similarly, the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), a leading teacher training institution, lists fees ranging from about GHS 2,226 to GHS 2,783 for regular students, with weekend and evening programs costing significantly more.
At the University of Cape Coast (UCC), regular freshmen fees typically fall between GHS 2,500 and GHS 3,200, while sandwich and distance programs vary depending on the structure and duration.
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) presents one of the widest gaps, with continuing students paying under GHS 2,000, but fee-paying freshmen exceeding GHS 6,000. Residential fees are also billed separately, adding to the total cost.
Other institutions, such as the SD Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) and the University for Development Studies (UDS), offer relatively lower fees, with some programmes under GHS 2,000, making them more accessible options for many students.
Overall, while public universities in Ghana continue to provide subsidized education, the variation in fees based on program type, study mode, and institution reflects the growing financial considerations students must navigate.
Prospective applicants are advised to verify fees through official university platforms, as these figures remain provisional and subject to change.
