GNAT Condemns Alleged Assault on Headteacher and Civilians by Soldiers in Western Region
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has strongly condemned the alleged assault of a headteacher and three civilians by military personnel at Adiewoso in the Western Region.
The incident, which has sparked widespread concern within the community and among education stakeholders, reportedly involved soldiers attacking the victims during an encounter under circumstances that are still being investigated.
According to reports from the area, the headteacher and the three civilians were allegedly subjected to brutal treatment by the soldiers. Although the exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear, the incident has generated anger among residents, many of whom are demanding justice, accountability, and a full investigation into the conduct of the security personnel involved.
Reacting to the development, the Ghana National Association of Teachers described the alleged assault as disturbing, unacceptable, and a serious violation of the rights of civilians.
The association expressed particular concern that one of the victims is a head teacher, stressing that educators who play a critical role in shaping the future of the country should never be subjected to violence or intimidation.
GNAT emphasized that teachers and civilians must be protected at all times, especially by security personnel entrusted with maintaining peace and safeguarding lives.
The association further called on military authorities and relevant state institutions to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter and ensure that any personnel found culpable are dealt with in accordance with the law.
According to GNAT, incidents of this nature, if not properly addressed, risk eroding public confidence in the country’s security institutions and creating fear within communities where military officers are expected to provide protection and maintain order.
Meanwhile, residents of Adiewoso and nearby communities have also voiced concern over the alleged assault. While calling for calm, they insist that justice must prevail and that those responsible must be held accountable.
The incident has once again reignited national conversations about the conduct of security personnel in their interactions with civilians, with many stakeholders calling for greater accountability, professionalism, and respect for human rights during security operations.
