Good News for National Service Personnel as Monthly Allowance Proposed to Increase from GH¢715 to GH¢1,200
The National Service Authority (NSA) has proposed a significant increase in the monthly allowance for national service personnel, raising it from GH¢715 to GH¢1,200.
The proposal, announced on July 23, 2026, has been welcomed by many service personnel and Ghanaians who believe it could ease the financial burden faced by graduates during their mandatory service year.
For several years, national service personnel have expressed concerns that the current GH¢715 allowance is insufficient to meet essential expenses such as transportation, accommodation, food, and other daily needs. If approved, the proposed increase would provide much-needed financial relief.
The proposed adjustment represents an increase of nearly 68%, reflecting efforts by the government and the NSA to address the rising cost of living and improve the welfare of young graduates serving the nation. Should the proposal receive parliamentary approval and be incorporated into the national budget, service personnel would enjoy a more sustainable monthly income.
Beyond easing financial hardship, the increase is expected to boost morale and encourage greater commitment to the national service programme. It could also reduce the financial pressure on families who continue to support their children throughout their service year.
Despite the excitement, the proposed increase has not yet been approved. It remains subject to government approval and parliamentary consideration as part of the 2026 budget process. Until then, national service personnel will continue to receive the current allowance of GH¢715.
Nevertheless, the proposal has generated optimism among graduates across the country, with many hopeful that the government will approve the increase and improve the welfare of thousands of young people serving Ghana.
