Family of UCC student found dead appeals to Interior Minister over stalled investigation
The family of the late Innocentia Atsufui Avinu has appealed to the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, to intervene in the lack of progress and communication regarding investigations into the 20-year-old’s death.
In an emotional appeal, her sister said the family has not received a formal update from the Ghana Police Service since its last public statement on June 15, 2026.
She claimed the family was subsequently informed on July 22 to proceed with Innocentia’s burial but said the information was communicated verbally without a formal explanation of the status of investigations or whether significant progress had been made in identifying those responsible.
The bereaved sister questioned whether the investigation would have received greater attention if the deceased had been related to a high-ranking government official or had been a foreign national.
“Justice in Ghana should not be a one-week wonder that disappears the moment social media moves on to the next trend,” she said.
She argued that the circumstances surrounding Innocentia’s death deserve continued attention and that the family should not be left without answers simply because public interest in the case has declined.
The sister further alleged that the family has struggled to reach investigators assigned to the case, claiming that repeated calls to the officers have gone unanswered.
She is therefore asking the Interior Minister to intervene and help the family establish where the investigation currently stands and what steps are being taken to bring the case to a conclusion.
She also raised questions about the special team reportedly assigned by the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the case, asking whether the team has been provided with the necessary resources and support to complete its work.

The 20-year-old Bachelor of Commerce student, who was studying Human Resource Management, was reported missing on June 11 after she was last seen at Ayensu Plaza Hostel on campus.
Her body was reportedly discovered two days later along the shoreline of the university’s coastal beach, deepening the grief and uncertainty surrounding her death.
As the family prepares for her final farewell, her sister insists that the funeral should not mark the end of the search for answers.
The family is calling for the investigation to remain active and for every necessary effort to be made to identify, arrest, and prosecute anyone found responsible for Innocentia’s death.
