Children are urged to speak up against abuse and participate in decisions affecting their lives

About 70 pupils from across the Savannah Region have gathered in Damongo to commemorate National Children’s Day, with a strong emphasis on child protection, participation and advocacy.

The celebration was held under the theme "Amplifying Children’s Voices on Abuse in Ghana: Promoting Child Protection, Participation and Advocacy".

Speaking at the event, the Savannah Regional Director of the Department of Children, Mr Ben Kenneth Nkrumah, educated the pupils on child abuse, harassment and the importance of protecting children from all forms of harm.

He encouraged the children to actively participate in programmes and activities that affect their lives, while using their voices positively to promote child rights and advocate against abuse.

The West Gonja Municipal Girl Child Coordinator, Mrs Jane Bomansaan Francis, also urged the pupils to be obedient, respectful and hardworking. She encouraged them to take their education seriously as an important foundation for their future.

As part of the celebration, the pupils were divided into groups according to their ages and given various topics to discuss. They later presented their findings, an exercise designed to build their confidence and encourage meaningful participation.

A volunteer staff member, Mr Tahiru Abdul Wadud Dawale, who completed his National Service at the Savannah Regional Children’s Office, expressed satisfaction with the pupils’ impressive participation, particularly considering the short notice given for the programme.

The West Gonja Municipal Director of Education, Alhaji Osman Nuhu, also visited the event to interact with and encourage the children. He commended the Savannah Regional Director of the Department of Children for his efforts towards promoting child welfare and development in the region.

The celebration in Damongo underscored the need to protect children from abuse while creating safe platforms where they can express their views, participate in decisions that affect them and have their voices heard.

The event further reinforced the message that children are not only beneficiaries of protection but also important partners in promoting their own rights and well-being.
