A group purported to be the Mamprusi Youth Association has made a bold declaration that reflects the growing tensions in the Bawku area: it has demanded the withdrawal of security forces deployed in the region.

The group asserts that the ongoing chieftaincy dispute between the Mamprusi and the Kusasi should be resolved without external interference, advocating for the concept that the stronger faction should have the right to claim the chieftaincy.

The statement was made during a press conference held in Bawku, where members of the Mamprusi Youth Group expressed their frustrations over the heavy military presence in the area.

They contended that the deployment of security forces heightened violence and made it harder for the local communities to communicate and resolve their differences peacefully.

"We believe that the government’s intervention with security forces is unnecessary and has only escalated the conflict," stated the group’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Adama.

The historical rivalry between the Mamprusi and the Kusasi has roots that stretch back decades, centered on issues of land, resources, and traditional leadership.

The current chieftaincy dispute has reignited longstanding grievances, leading to violence and unrest in the area.

The Mamprusi Youth Group contends that allowing the two factions to dispute their claims without external pressure would lead to a more genuine resolution.

"We are confident in our ability to settle this matter among ourselves. We believe that the stronger group, through dialogue and mutual respect, should be recognized in the chieftaincy," Adama added.

The group, however, emphasized that their call is not an endorsement of violence but rather a plea for the government to trust the local populace to manage their affairs.

Local authorities have expressed concerns about the potential for increased violence if security forces are withdrawn.

The Deputy Minister for Interior, who visited Bawku last week, reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region. "While we understand the frustrations of the Mamprusi Youth, our priority is to ensure that no further violence occurs. The presence of security forces is a preventive measure," he stated.

As the situation in Bawku remains tense, the government faces the challenge of balancing local demands with the need for public safety.

The Mamprusi Youth Group's call for the withdrawal of security forces adds another layer to an already complex conflict.

Observers are watching closely to see how both the government and the communities will navigate these turbulent waters in pursuit of a lasting resolution.

The future of Bawku hangs in the balance as both the Mamprusi and Kusasi communities seek to assert their rights and identities in a region fraught with historical conflicts and modern challenges.

The outcome of this dispute could have significant implications for governance, peace, and community relations in the area.
