"Turn Bawku into a Military zone"—IGP.

Opare Gyan, an NDC regional communication team member and editor of The Democrats newspaper, highlighted the serious violence in Bawku speaking to Radio 1.

In light of recent killings linked to the long-running chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasis and Mamprusis in the Upper East Region, he suggested that Bawku should be turned into Military zone.

He stated, “The reason why Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno visits Bawku is to promise the youth in Bawku. Therefore, he is doing that just to bring peace and love among the two different tribes. That’s one of the options that can also create unity among the Kusasis and the Mamprusis in the Upper East region.”

Opare Gyan also explained that creating more job opportunities for the youth could help reduce the fighting. When young people are engaged in meaningful work, they are less likely to have time or interest in getting involved in conflict.

He emphasized, “Just recently the government has launched a Feed Ghana programme; therefore, if they used that project work to employ the youth from Bawku and they have moved from their place to a different place for the work, do you think they will leave their work and go back to Bawku because of the chieftaincy fight? So this kind of method can also encourage the Bawku youth to put a stop to the fight.”

In his conclusion, he added, “The words that were said by the inspector general of police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno that was the right way to maintain peace in Bawku township.”
