2025 BECE: Accident victims assured of SHS placement
The Ministry of Education has assured candidates of the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) who missed the English and Creative Arts and Design papers due to an accident that their chances of placement will not be affected.
Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, emphasized that the academic futures of the affected pupils remain secure and that measures have been put in place to support them.
On Tuesday, June 12, 2025, eight BECE candidates from Nangbagu Yapala M/A Junior High School in the Northern Region were involved in a road accident while travelling to write the English and Creative Arts and Design papers at the Tamale Senior High School examination centre.
The candidates arrived only ten minutes before the end of the paper and, therefore, were unable to write the exams.
The incident sparked concerns among parents and guardians, who feared the pupils might miss out on placement into Senior High Schools.
However, the Northern Regional Director of Education, Alhassan Alidu Junior, who accompanied the Deputy Minister on his tour of various examination centres, clarified that the students have two options available, self-placement and automatic placement, and assured that they will not be unduly penalized due to the incident.
Dr. Apaak is currently on a two-day working visit to the Northern Region, monitoring the conduct of the BECE.
On Monday, June 16, 2025, he visited the Tamale Senior High School, Islamic Senior High School, and the Sakasaka Cluster of Schools examination centres. He is expected to continue the tour on Tuesday in the Eastern Corridor, including a visit to Yendi.
