Binduri: 14 Suspected Gunmen Arrested, Ammunition Seized in Joint Security Operation
Fourteen (14) suspected gunmen have been apprehended and a cache of weapons retrieved in a high-level joint security operation conducted by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Ghana Police Service in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.
The operation took place on the afternoon of Sunday, June 15, 2025, between the hours of 3:30 p.m. and 4:50 p.m.
According to security sources, the operation was a coordinated cordon and search initiative aimed at disarming violent elements and restoring order in the volatile Bawku enclave and its surrounding communities.
The Binduri and Bawku districts have recently been rocked by a surge in violent attacks, leading to at least 14 confirmed deaths and the destruction of multiple properties including homes, all within a one-week span from Saturday, June 7, to Saturday, June 14.
The security agencies successfully confiscated a variety of weapons and ammunition from the suspects, believed to be linked to the ongoing disturbances that have plagued the area in recent months. The retrieved items are undergoing ballistic analysis as part of ongoing investigations.
The 14 arrested individuals are currently in the custody of the Ghana Police Service. Authorities have confirmed that detailed investigations are underway and that the suspects will be processed for court in accordance with Ghanaian law.
In response to the successful operation, the Member of Parliament for Binduri, Hon. Mahmoud Issifu, has expressed appreciation to the Ghana Armed Forces and the Police for their swift and decisive intervention. He noted that the arrest and seizure of arms mark a significant step in quelling the violence and restoring public safety in the district.
“I commend the efforts of our security forces for their bravery and professionalism. This operation sends a clear message that lawlessness will not be tolerated in Binduri or any part of the Upper East Region. We stand with our security agencies as they continue to work to protect lives and property,” the MP said in a statement on Monday.
Security analysts have described the development as a positive indicator that the state is asserting control in regions previously overwhelmed by sporadic gun battles and communal unrest.
However, they caution that sustainable peace will require more than military action, urging continued dialogue, conflict mediation, and community engagement to address the root causes of the tension.
The Upper East Regional Coordinating Council has reiterated its commitment to supporting all security efforts and has encouraged residents to cooperate with authorities, report suspicious activities, and resist incitement from any factions seeking to destabilize the region.
Authorities say similar operations will be conducted in identified hotspots to ensure lasting peace in northern Ghana.
