Oti Region: One person confirmed dead, several injured due to ethnic clashes

One person has been k!lled and several injured in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region due to renewed ethnic clashes, according to Joseph Antwi, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

The confusion started in the early hours of Thursday, 26th June, when an attempt to pour libation sparked a violent fight between two rival groups.

According to reports, gunshots were heard around 2:00 a.m. as members of one ethnic group tried to perform traditional rites ahead of the Yam Festival. But a rival group strongly opposed the move, causing the situation to escalate.

This comes as a big blow, especially after authorities had earlier agreed to suspend all public festivals to maintain peace in the area.

Speaking on Channel One TV, MCE Joseph Antwi said two people were rushed to the hospital, but sadly, one of them died later in the afternoon.

“We rushed them to the hospital, around 3 p.m.; one was confirmed dead, but the other is receiving treatment,” he confirmed.

Mr. Antwi also revealed that two young women were hit by stray bullets. One has been admitted to the hospital, but the other is still missing.

“There are two young ladies who were also shot; one has been moved to the hospital, and the other, we can’t find her. We do not know her whereabouts as I speak,” he said, looking worried.

The Municipal Security Council is expected to hold an emergency meeting to find solutions and prevent more violence, as tensions remain high in the community.
