Teacher Trainees To Eat Once A Day – PRINCOF Announces

The Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) has announced that teacher trainees across the country will now be served only one meal per day, effective immediately.

This commences effective Monday, 16, 2025.

PRINCOF acknowledges significant difficulties in maintaining the prior three-meal system within the current government's allocated funds of GHS 8.00 per trainee per day, which is why this sudden adjustment has occurred.

Dues to the inadequate funding has made it increasingly difficult for colleges to maintain nutritional standards while providing multiple daily meals.

Thousands of teacher trainees across the country who depend on institutional feeding arrangements for their academic studies are impacted by the decision. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner used to be provided to students as part of their residential college experience.

According to the new arrangement, trainees will receive only one substantial hot meal daily, forcing them to seek alternative arrangements for their remaining nutritional needs.

PRINCOF's announcement highlights the broader funding challenges facing Ghana's teacher training institutions.

This, however, applies to all 46 public colleges of education.

The GHS 8.00 daily allocation, intended to cover feeding costs, has proven insufficient amid rising food prices and inflation. College administrators have struggled to balance nutritional requirements with budget constraints, ultimately leading to this reduction in meal provision.

This development raises concerns about the welfare of teacher trainees and the potential impact on their academic performance and overall health.

The reduced feeding arrangement may also affect enrollment in teacher training colleges, as students consider the financial implications of securing additional meals independently.

The situation emphasize the urgent need for increased government investment in teacher education infrastructure and student welfare in the country.
