The Federal Government of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to ban the popular video-sharing app TikTok, citing concerns over national focus and digital integrity.
TikTok will be banned in Nigeria effective June 30, 2025.
The decision follows growing debates about the platform’s impact on youth productivity, mental health, and the spread of misleading content.
According to government sources, TikTok has been identified as a major distraction for many Nigerian youths and students, negatively affecting academic performance and workplace discipline.
Officials also raised alarms over the platform’s lack of control over the circulation of explicit and misleading videos, which they say undermine cultural values and national unity.

Minister of Information and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijani stressed that the move is part of a broader initiative to protect Nigeria’s digital space and promote responsible use of technology. “We are not against innovation, but platforms that do more harm than good to our society must be regulated or discontinued,” he said.
While the announcement has sparked mixed reactions across social media, with some supporting the ban and others criticizing it as an infringement on digital freedom, the government insists the decision is necessary to protect the nation’s moral fabric and ensure a more focused, productive population.
