Bawku: We’ve shifted from peacekeeping to enforcement—GAF declares.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced an immediate shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement operations in Bawku and surrounding areas, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the statement dated July 29, 2025, the military states the move has become necessary due to ongoing violence, targeted attacks, and killings by armed elements, which have destabilized the region and put civilian lives at risk.

“As a result of the deteriorating security situation, the Ghana Armed Forces is transitioning into peace enforcement operations to restore law and order,” the statement noted.

The new operational approach will see intensified military actions in Bawku, Binduri, Nabdam, and Zebilla. The Armed Forces say the enforcement measures may include curfews, movement restrictions, and all lawful actions needed to protect lives and property.

“We remain fully committed and in readiness to execute our constitutional mandate to ensure that the country is peaceful and its citizens are safe,” the GAF stated.

Residents have been urged to fully cooperate with security personnel and avoid interfering with ongoing operations.
