GNFS Rescues 17 Out Of 20 After Fatal Accident On Nadowli–Jirapa Road
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed the rescue of 17 passengers following a tragic accident on the Nadowli–Jirapa stretch in the Upper West Region.
The crash, which occurred on Wednesday, September 17, involved a SsangYong minivan with registration number AS-2684-16 carrying 20 passengers.
According to the GNFS, the vehicle somersaulted after a tyre burst, leaving three people dead, including a police officer.
In a statement filed by the Regional PRO, the Service said its duty crew of six from the Nadowli Fire Station was dispatched to the scene at 12:41 p.m.
They managed to pull out 17 survivors, who were quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
News of the accident has triggered widespread debate on social media. Many Ghanaians expressed shock over how a minivan designed for far fewer passengers could be carrying as many as 20 people. Others questioned the roadworthiness of the vehicle, describing it as rickety and unfit for public transport.
Several commentators also called for urgent national attention to address the alarming rise in road crashes, which continue to claim lives across the country.
Authorities are yet to provide further updates on the condition of the injured or confirm whether investigations have begun into the incident.
