How to Calculate BECE Aggregates and Placement in 3 Simple Steps as Deadline Approaches
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released an important update on how Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) aggregates are calculated for the 2025 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). For many students and parents, understanding this calculation is the key to predicting school placement outcomes.
Ghana Media Trend, will take you through the 3 simple steps to calculate your BECE aggregate and help you understand what it means for your placement.
Step 1: Identify Your Core Subjects
Start with the four compulsory subjects:
English Language
Mathematics
Integrated Science
Social Studies
Officials explained that a candidate’s aggregate is determined by combining the grades from the four core subjects, English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies, together with the best two grades from the remaining subjects.
Step 2: Add Your Best Two Other Subjects
From the remaining elective subjects, select your two best grades.
Ignore weaker ones—only your best two electives are added to the aggregate.
Step 3: Do the Math
Add the six subjects together using this formula:
English + Mathematics + Science + Social Studies + Best Two Subjects = Aggregate
Example:
English – 2
Mathematics – 1
Integrated Science – 2
Social Studies – 3
Your Best Electives
ICT – 2
BDT – 1
Total = 11 (Aggregate 11)
Lowest Possible Aggregate: 6
Highest Possible Aggregate: 54
The closer your aggregate is to 6, the better your chances of securing a top-choice school.
It was further emphasized that while aggregates remain important, raw scores are still the most decisive factor in the placement process. This means that when candidates have the same aggregate, the one with the higher raw score will be given priority, especially in competitive schools.
In a statement issued by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, parents, teachers, and candidates were reminded that the CSSPS portal is currently open for confirmation of school choices.
The portal can be accessed at https://www.cssps.gov.gh/hub/login, with a 24-hour message service available to assist users who may have challenges or discrepancies.
According to GES, the portal will remain active until September 8, 2025, and all candidates are encouraged to log in and confirm their selections before the deadline. The Service has also invited feedback from the public to help improve the placement system and ensure transparency in the process.
