Kusaug Petition Against Maripoma Mining Services Limited Mining in Zongoiri in the Upper East Region

THE MINERAL WEALTH OF KUSAUG: FOCUS ON ZONGOIRE

Kusaug petition against maripoma mining services limited mining in Zongoiri

The Upper East Region of Ghana has in recent times emerged as a hub for gold mining, attracting increasing national attention. With the discovery of significant gold deposits in the Talensi, Kassena-Nankana, Bongo, Builsa, and Kusaug areas, particularly in the eastern part of the region, the mineral potential of the Upper East is becoming more evident.

MINERALS IN KUSAUG

According to the reports, the Kusaug Traditional Area is endowed with vast quantities of mineral resources spread across different locations. Notably, the Zongoire/Kusanaba area is said to contain large deposits of gold, diamond, and bauxite, making it a highly strategic site for both local and national economic development.

Kusaug Areas

  • The Zongoiri/Kusanaba belt is endowed with gold, diamonds, and bauxite.
  • The Gombo community is blessed with high-quality ball clay for ceramic tiles.
  • Extensive limestone deposits are in Kugri and some parts of Garu and Tempane.

These natural endowments position Kusaug as a potential industrial and investment hub for the future. Protecting these resources and ensuring their responsible utilization is therefore critical for sustainable development in Kusaug and the Upper East Region as a whole.

THE ZONGOIRI GOLD PROJECT

Zongoiri, a community in the Bawku West District, lies at Latitude 10°39'57" N and Longitude 0°24'39" W. It is strategically located, bordered by the White Volta River to the south and the Red Volta River to the west.

The area is naturally rich, featuring the Zongoiri Waterfall at Kianga, a growing tourist attraction, as well as sacred groves and a historically significant water source believed to prevent or heal guinea worm infestation.

Beyond its cultural and ecological importance, Zongoiri is widely believed to contain vast deposits of gold, diamond, and bauxite, stretching across to the Kusanaba community. These resources, if sustainably explored, could transform not only Zongoiri but also the entire Kusaug area into a hub of economic growth and prosperity.

Importantly, Zongoiri is not just a land of minerals; it is also a cradle of Kusaug history, culture, and traditional heritage. The preservation of this heritage, alongside the responsible harnessing of its resources, remains central to the aspirations of the Kusaug people and their traditional leaders, as it will unlock opportunities for large-scale investment, industrialization, and community development.
