Watch Video: Students at Tamale Technical University Block Roads Due to Unpaid SRC Funds and Fee Hikes

Tamale Technical University students held a large-scale protest on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, blocking entry roads to the University Campus, according to a TV3 broadcast. They claim that management's failure to transfer funds into the Student Representative Council (SRC) account was the trigger for the demonstration.

The aggrieved students stated the funds were meant to support student activities and administrative work of the SRC.

According to the students, management has delayed the transfer for several months, creating frustration and hampering student welfare initiatives. The protest, which caused traffic disruptions around the school’s main entrance, drew the attention of residents and security personnel.

Beyond the SRC account issue, the students also raised concerns over the recent 15 percent increase in school fees. Many of them argued that the increment is unfair, especially given the economic challenges facing students and their families. They insisted that management must reverse the decision and prioritize the needs of students.

Leaders of the protest stated that they had engaged management on several occasions but did not receive positive feedback, leaving them with no option but to demonstrate. They warned that if their demands are not met, they will intensify their actions in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the school’s administration has yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Security officers were deployed to maintain calm, but no violence was reported during the protest.

The demonstration highlights growing tensions between students and university authorities in Ghana over issues of accountability, transparency, and affordability of education. Observers say the outcome of this standoff will be crucial for student leadership and management relations going forward.
