Robber jailed 20 years for attacking tricycle rider at Bekwai in the Ashanti Region

The Circuit Court in Bekwai in the Ashanti Region has sentenced a young man, Michael Antwi Boasiako, to 20 years in prison for his role in a violent robbery incident that occurred near Wawase in the Ashanti Region.

The conviction follows a successful prosecution by the Bekwai Police, who secured the sentence on January 12, 2026, after Antwi Boasiako was found guilty of attacking and robbing a tricycle (pragya) rider.

The incident occurred on August 14, 2025, when Antwi Boasiako and an accomplice, who is currently at large, hired the complainant, a pragya rider identified as Godfred Tabi, to transport them to Wawase under the guise of visiting a cottage.

During the journey, the convict and his accomplice attacked the victim, tied his hands and legs, and eventually fastened him to a cocoa tree before fleeing with his pragya tricycle.

The victim, however, managed to free his hands, disentangle himself, and seek help from a nearby cottage.

He later called his elder brother, who mobilized people to rescue him.

While the rescuers were on their way, they spotted the stolen Pragya tricycle being ridden away by unknown persons and attempted to arrest the occupants.

One of the suspects managed to escape, while the other was apprehended.

Police officers arrived promptly at the scene and took custody of the suspect.

Ashanti South Regional Police Commander DCOP Joseph Nyaaba, briefing journalists, said following investigations, the suspect was processed for court, convicted, and handed a 20-year jail sentence on two counts, which will run concurrently.
