Students to pay more next academic year as the University of Ghana releases the 2025/2026 fee schedule.
A coalition of student representatives is calling on the University of Ghana to provide clear justification for what they describe as rapid and significant increases in academic fees announced for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The provisional schedules for the College of Humanities show upward adjustments across both regular and fee-paying undergraduate programmes, including Humanities (Bachelor of Arts), Humanities (Administration/Law) and Post-First Degree Law programmes.
Breakdown of the 2024/2025 academic fee structure
For the 2024/2025 academic year, approved fees for regular Humanities students entering Level 100 stood at GHS 2,064, with an additional GHS 255 in third-party charges, bringing the total to GHS 2,319. Continuing students at Levels 200, 300 and 400 paid GHS 1,519 in approved fees plus GHS 255 in third-party additions, totalling GHS 1,774.
At the same time, Level 200 and 300 Humanities students classified in a different fee category paid as high as GHS 2,383 when third-party charges are included.
For Full Fee-Paying students, the Level 100 Humanities entrants for 2024/2025 paid GHS 5,295, while continuing students will paid GHS 4,750. Level 200 and 300 students paid GHS 5,359 under the same schedule.
The Humanities (Administration/Law) category, Level 100 fee-paying students paid GHS 6,378 inclusive of third-party charges.
New fee structure expected in 2025/2026 academic year
The fee schedule for 2025/2026 indicates another round of increases.
Level 100 regular Humanities students will pay GHS 3,110, representing a sharp rise from the previous year. Continuing students at Levels 200, 300 and 400 will pay GHS 2,253, while Level 200 and 300 students categorised differently will pay GHS 3,174.
For fee-paying Humanities students in 2025/2026, Level 100 entrants will pay GHS 6,086, while continuing students will pay GHS 5,229, and Level 200 and 300 students will be charged GHS 6,150.
A similar upward trajectory is observed in the Administration/Law fee-paying programmes, where Level 100 students will pay GHS 7,169.
Third-party charges add to cost burden
The breakdown indicates that students are required to pay additional third-party fees including:
- SRC Hostel Development Levy – GHS 300
- 75th Anniversary Legacy Project – GHS 100
- SRC Welfare – GHS 50
- Reprographic Fees – GHS 5
Telecel Data (optional for continuing students)
These charges compound the total cost borne by students.
Students raise alarm over financial pressure
Student leaders warn that the rapid escalation in tuition and supplementary charges may place further strain on households.
The coalition also cautions that students may increasingly face financial distress, delayed registration, deferred studies, or dropout risks if affordability concerns are not addressed.
