| 37 Military Hospital |
The 37 Military Hospital stands as one of Ghana’s most iconic healthcare institutions, renowned for its discipline, professionalism, and life-saving role in both military and civilian medical care. Located in Accra, the hospital’s history is deeply rooted in Ghana’s colonial past and its journey toward independence.
The name “37” dates back to World War II. In 1941, the British colonial administration established the hospital primarily to treat soldiers of the Gold Coast Regiment who were returning from the Burma campaign. Rather than using a traditional name, the facility was identified by its military unit number—37—a designation that has endured for decades.
After Ghana gained independence in 1957, the hospital transitioned from serving only military personnel to becoming a major referral center for the general public.
Over the years, it expanded its facilities and services, evolving into a full-fledged teaching and referral hospital equipped with modern medical technology.
Today, the 37 Military Hospital plays a crucial role in national healthcare delivery, emergency response, and disaster management. Its rich history, symbolized by its unique name, reflects resilience, service, and a lasting commitment to saving lives—making it not just a hospital but a national landmark in Ghana’s medical history.
