Chaos in Tamale as Hundreds of Residents Storm Water Company Over Severe Water Shortage

A growing water crisis in the Greater Tamale Metropolis reached a boiling point as hundreds of frustrated residents stormed the offices of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to protest prolonged water shortages affecting the city and its surrounding communities.

The incident happened in the morning on Tuesday, February 10, 2026

The protesters, drawn from areas including Tamale Central, Lamashegu, Vittin, Sagnarigu, and nearby peri-urban settlements, accused the water utility of failing to provide a reliable water supply for weeks. Many residents say taps have run dry, forcing households to rely on expensive water vendors, unsafe sources, or long queues at the few functioning boreholes in the area.

Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the demonstrators demanded immediate intervention from GWCL and government authorities. Some residents expressed concern over the rising cost of water sold by private vendors, which has placed an additional financial burden on families already struggling with high living costs. Others warned that the situation poses serious public health risks, especially as schools, health facilities, and markets are also affected.

According to community members, the shortage has disrupted daily life, with women and children spending hours searching for water for cooking, bathing, and other basic needs. “Water is life. We cannot continue living like this,” one protester lamented during the demonstration.

Officials of the Ghana Water Company reportedly engaged protest leaders and assured them that efforts are underway to address the challenge. While GWCL has previously attributed intermittent supply in parts of Tamale to technical challenges, high demand, and low water levels at treatment facilities, residents insist that the situation has become unbearable and requires urgent, transparent action.

The water crisis in Greater Tamale highlights long-standing infrastructure and supply challenges in rapidly growing urban centers. Residents are calling on the government, municipal authorities, and GWCL to provide both immediate relief and long-term solutions to ensure a sustainable and reliable water supply for the metropolis.

As tensions remain high, many residents say they will continue to press for answers and concrete timelines, warning that further inaction could lead to more protests in the coming days.
