Police officer shot dead during suspected armed robbery attack on Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Upper East Region
A police officer has been shot dead by suspected armed robbers during an attack along the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Upper East Region.
The incident occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m.
Two police officers were travelling from Widnaba towards Zebilla when they reportedly came upon an armed robbery in progress along the stretch.
According to reports, the suspects opened fire upon spotting the officers, fatally wounding one of them.
The injured officer, whose identity has not yet been released, was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital by a responding police team after a distress call was received.
He was pronounced dead on arrival.
In a statement, the Regional Police Command said it has launched a full investigation into the attack and deployed a special operation to track down and arrest those responsible.
The police assured the public that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and appealed to residents especially those along the Zebilla–Widnaba corridor, to support security efforts by sharing any relevant information.
Despite the growing security challenges on some major road networks, the command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property in the Bawku Division and surrounding areas.
