Watch Video: Four Dead, Seven Injured in Fuel Tanker Explosion on Nsawam–Accra Highway
Four people have been confirmed dead and seven others injured following a devastating fuel tanker explosion at Okanta, off the Nsawam–Accra Highway, in the early hours of Saturday.
The tragic incident occurred around 4:49 a.m. when a collision involving a fuel tanker, a VVIP passenger bus, and three other vehicles triggered a massive fire that engulfed all the vehicles involved.
Firefighters from the Suhum and Bunso Fire Stations responded swiftly to a distress call and arrived at the scene to find multiple vehicles consumed by intense flames. According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the rapid spread of the fire significantly hampered rescue efforts.
Emergency responders battled the blaze amid thick smoke and extreme heat, working to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading further. The affected vehicles were reportedly burnt beyond recognition.
Seven injured victims were rescued and rushed to nearby health facilities. Some are currently receiving treatment at the Nsawam Government Hospital, while others have been referred to medical facilities in Accra and Koforidua for further care.
Authorities are yet to provide full details on the cause of the crash, but investigations are underway to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision and subsequent explosion.
The Nsawam–Accra Highway remains one of the busiest corridors linking the Eastern Region to the capital, and the incident caused significant disruption to traffic flow in the early hours of the day.
Officials have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when driving near fuel tankers and other heavy-duty vehicles, as investigations continue.
