A visibly emotional unpaid teacher struggled to hold back tears during a protest while recounting the hardship of teaching for over a year without receiving a salary.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, she lamented over how the situation has immensely impacted her life.
“It’s so painful teaching for a year without salary… I’m tired. Even to call credit, you have to beg. Sometimes you starve just to go and teach,” she said while struggling to hold back her tears.
The teacher is among dozens recruited in 2024 who staged a protest outside the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra on February 18, 2026.
They demanded the immediate release of their staff identification numbers and the payment of salary arrears, which in some cases have accumulated for up to 14 months.
According to the group, about 6,200 teachers were granted financial clearance in 2025.
However, many of those recruited in November 2024 say they remain excluded from the payroll despite actively teaching.
