GES lifts ban on inter-schools sports competition in Central Region.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially lifted the ban on inter-school sports activities in the Central Region, clearing the way for the resumption of competitions among second-cycle institutions.

In a directive dated March 24, 2026, and signed by the Central Regional Director of Education, Juliette Dufie Otami, the decision follows approval from the GES Director-General after a period of suspension.

The ban was initially imposed in response to reported incidents of violence, clashes, and student misconduct during inter-school competitions.

Authorities explained that the move was necessary to safeguard students, staff, and the general public, while restoring discipline within the school sports system.

Following extensive consultations with key stakeholders, the GES has introduced a comprehensive set of guidelines to regulate sporting activities in the region. These measures are designed to strengthen supervision, enhance safety standards, and prevent a recurrence of the incidents that led to the suspension.

The decision also comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving a student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School, who reportedly lost his life after being assaulted by fellow students during an inter-school athletics competition at the Agona Swedru Sports Stadium.

According to the directive, inter-school athletics competitions are set to resume on March 31, 2026, with strict adherence to the newly approved protocols.

Heads of senior high and senior high technical schools have been instructed to familiarize themselves with the guidelines and ensure full compliance. The GES has cautioned that any breach of the rules will attract appropriate administrative sanctions.

The Central Regional Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with stakeholders to ensure that school sports are conducted in a safe, disciplined, and well-organized environment.
