Meaning Behind GR, AS, GW, DV, CP, CR, and ER on Vehicle Number Plates in Ghana (Check Out...)
In Ghana, every vehicle is issued with a unique number plate by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
These number plates help authorities identify vehicles, track ownership, and determine the region where a vehicle was registered. The plate system follows a simple format made up of a regional code, a unique number, and the year of registration.
For example, a number plate such as CR 1253 19 can easily be understood. The letters CR indicate that the vehicle was registered in the Central Region. The number 1253 is the specific identification number assigned to that vehicle, while 19 shows that the vehicle was registered in 2019.
Across the country, different regions have their own letter codes that appear at the beginning of license plates. These codes make it easy to identify where a vehicle was first registered.
For instance, GR and GW are used for vehicles registered in the Greater Accra Region, while AS represents vehicles registered in the Ashanti Region. The code CR stands for the Central Region, and ER represents the Eastern Region. Other regions in Ghana also have their own unique codes that follow the same system.
Apart from regional codes, some vehicles are issued with special number plates used for temporary or specific purposes. One example is DV, which means Defective Vehicle. This plate is given to vehicles that are not yet fully registered but are allowed to operate temporarily under specific conditions.
Another special plate is DP, which means Driven from Port. This is typically issued to vehicles that have just arrived in the country and are being moved from the port to another destination for registration.
These special number plates are regulated under the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683), together with regulations from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, to ensure that all vehicles operating temporarily on the road meet the necessary legal and safety requirements.
Overall, Ghana’s vehicle number plate system plays a vital role in vehicle identification, law enforcement, and maintaining road safety across the country.
