TVET workers declare nationwide strike over unresolved concerns

Workers of the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service have declared a nationwide strike, citing management’s failure to take “concrete and satisfactory steps” to resolve long-standing concerns.

In a directive issued by the GTVET-PSWU Divisional Union and dated March 13, 2026, Divisional IMC Secretary Seth Botchway instructed all members of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) within the TVET Service to withdraw their services effective Tuesday, March 24.

He stated that all members are to lay down their tools until management takes meaningful action to address the numerous issues raised by staff.

According to the union, the strike action became inevitable after several attempts to engage management failed to produce results. Although concerns had been raised as far back as March 10, leadership said there was no adequate response, leading to a breakdown in efforts to resolve the matter amicably.

While the notice did not specify the exact grievances, union leaders indicated that the issues have persisted for months, negatively impacting staff welfare and working conditions across the TVET system.

The union has also encouraged members to submit any additional concerns to be incorporated into future negotiations when discussions resume.

Despite embarking on the strike, the union emphasized its willingness to return to the negotiating table. It called on the Ghana TVET Service to treat the outstanding issues with urgency to prevent further disruption to academic and administrative activities nationwide.

Members have been urged to remain calm, disciplined, and law-abiding throughout the industrial action. The union further warned against any form of intimidation, coercion, or victimisation, advising affected members to promptly report such incidents to leadership for appropriate action.
