GNAT Kicks Against 7,000 Teacher Recruitment Plan, Demands Higher Intake

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has strongly criticised the government’s decision to recruit only 7,000 teachers, despite more than 10,000 trained graduates from Colleges of Education and other tertiary institutions still awaiting employment.

The Association described the move as both disturbing and unfortunate, particularly in light of assurances given by the Finance Minister during the 2025 base pay negotiations to expand recruitment across the public sector, including the education sector.

Addressing the media during GNAT’s National Council meeting at Ejisu-Abankro in the Ashanti Region, National President, Prosper Tachie Esq., urged the government to significantly increase the recruitment quota to absorb the backlog of qualified teachers.

He further appealed for priority to be given to previously trained graduates who are yet to be posted, before new graduates are considered.

GNAT also cautioned that the growing number of unemployed trained teachers could pose a serious national security risk if not urgently addressed.

In addition, the Association expressed concern over delays by some employers in transferring pension deductions to the appropriate fund managers, noting that such lapses have led to penalties and could jeopardise workers’ retirement benefits.

GNAT is therefore calling for strict compliance to safeguard the retirement benefits of workers.
