Ugandan student acting as Jesus hospitalised after "whipping" scene leads to severe injuries

A Ugandan university student has been hospitalised after sustaining serious injuries while portraying Jesus Christ during a Good Friday reenactment that reportedly escalated beyond safe limits.

The student, identified as Dennis Zziwa, collapsed after being repeatedly whipped during a “Way of the Cross” procession held at Our Lady of Africa Church.

The annual event, observed on Good Friday, is part of a long-standing Christian tradition in which believers dramatise the final moments of Christ’s life leading up to his crucifixion. Participants typically reenact scenes such as carrying the cross and symbolic flogging.

However, what was meant to be a symbolic act reportedly turned severe, leaving Zziwa seriously injured. Witnesses say he showed visible signs of distress before collapsing during the performance.

Emergency responders from the Uganda Red Cross quickly intervened, administering first aid before transporting him to Lamonne Health Centre for further treatment.

The “Way of the Cross,” also known as the Stations of the Cross, is widely observed by Christians around the world, often involving physical demonstrations to reflect the suffering and sacrifice described in scripture.

However, the incident has sparked renewed concerns about safety during such reenactments, particularly when participants are exposed to physically intense or painful acts.

Zziwa is currently recovering under medical supervision following the ordeal.
