Government Declares Wednesday, May 27, 2026, as Public Holiday for Eid-ul-Adha

The Government of Ghana has declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026, a statutory public holiday in celebration of Eid-ul-Adha.

The announcement was made in a press release issued on May 15, 2026. According to the statement, the holiday is to mark Eid-ul-Adha, one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar, and is to be observed nationwide.

The statement, signed by Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Minister for the Interior, called on the general public to take note of the declaration and observe the day accordingly.

Eid-ul-Adha, widely known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is celebrated by Muslims around the world to honour the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.

The occasion is typically observed with special prayers, acts of charity, and the sharing of food with family, friends, and the underprivileged.

With the declaration, schools, public institutions, and several businesses across the country are expected to suspend operations on Wednesday, May 27, to allow citizens to fully participate in the religious festivities.
