Military starts two-week counter-terrorism exercise in Binduri
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Northern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Worlanyo Agbebo, has officially launched “Exercise Storm Shield 2026” at Bazua in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region as part of efforts to strengthen the combat readiness of security personnel against violent extremism and terrorism.
The two-week military exercise, organised by the Ghana Army in collaboration with the Ghana Navy and Ghana Air Force, is being conducted under the theme: “Countering Violent Extremism and Terrorism for Sustainable Peace and Development.”
The exercise aims to enhance the operational capabilities of officers within the Northern and Central Command operational areas to effectively respond to emerging security threats within and beyond Ghana’s borders.
Addressing officers and personnel during the launch on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Brigadier General Agbebo urged troops to uphold professionalism, resilience and teamwork throughout the exercise, stressing that unity remains critical in counter-insurgency operations.
“No soldier fights alone in counter-insurgency. Your section, your platoon, your company — you live or die on how well you move and think as one. Trust is built here, in the mud and the heat, over the next two weeks,” he stated.
He expressed satisfaction with the broad participation of personnel drawn from various formations of the Ghana Armed Forces, including the Southern Command, Central Command, Northern Command, Armoured Brigade, Engineer Brigade and the Army Training Command.
According to him, the inclusion of the Ghana Navy and Ghana Air Force demonstrates the Armed Forces’ commitment to joint operations and integrated mission planning, which are increasingly essential in modern military engagements.
Brigadier General Agbebo explained that the first week of the exercise would focus on intensive company and battalion-level field training activities.
These activities are expected to provide participating troops and commanders with the opportunity to rehearse tactical drills, command and control procedures, combat support integration, manoeuvre operations, communications, logistics coordination and battlefield decision-making under simulated operational conditions.
He further noted that the second week would feature company-level offensive operations culminating in battalion-level offensive operations aimed at validating operational plans, testing combat readiness and assessing the effectiveness of troops in realistic operational environments.
The exercise will conclude with Civil-Military Cooperation activities designed to strengthen relations between the military and local communities while promoting the human security component of modern military operations.
The launch brought together senior military officers, security personnel and other stakeholders committed to safeguarding peace and stability in the northern sector of the country.
