Report: Delayed Medical Care, Not Crash, Led to Death of Charles Amissah

A committee tasked with investigating the death of Charles Amissah has concluded that he did not die from injuries sustained in the crash, but rather from delays in receiving critical medical treatment.

The 29-year-old employee of Promasidor Ghana Limited was knocked down in a hit-and-run incident near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Overpass on February 6, 2026. Although he was initially attended to by the National Ambulance Service, he reportedly faced significant challenges in accessing further medical care.

According to findings, Amissah was unable to receive treatment at several major health facilities—including the Police Hospital, Ridge Hospital, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital—primarily due to a lack of available beds. He later died while still being transported in search of care.

Presenting the committee’s report, Chairman Agyeman Badu Akosa stated that the autopsy indicates the death was preventable.

“The pathology shows a gradual loss of life due to delayed medical intervention, not the injuries from the crash itself. Timely care at any of the facilities could have saved him,” he explained.

He further noted that the immediate cause of death was severe blood loss resulting from an upper arm injury.

The case has reignited concerns over gaps in emergency response systems and the accessibility of urgent healthcare services in Ghana.
