TGMA 27: Black Sherif wins Artiste of the Year for the second time

Ghanaian music star Black Sherif has once again etched his name into the history books after being crowned Artiste of the Year at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards for the second time in his career.

With this achievement, he becomes the 27th recipient of the prestigious title since the awards scheme began, and only the sixth artiste to win it more than once, joining the ranks of Akyeame, Kojo Antwi, VVIP, Sarkodie and Stonebwoy.

This year’s victory was far from ordinary. It capped off a dominant night for Black Sherif, who walked away with a total of five awards, turning the ceremony into a clear statement of his consistency, influence, and growing cultural impact.

He clinched the top honour ahead of strong contenders including Sarkodie, Medikal, Wendy Shay and Diana Hamilton—all established names who continue to shape Ghana’s contemporary music landscape.

Beyond Artiste of the Year, his haul included Songwriter of the Year, Best Hip Hop Song of the Year, Best Afropop Song of the Year, and Album of the Year, completing a clean sweep that underlined his versatility across genres.

The journey behind the success traces back to 2019, when a young Black Sherif uploaded “Cry for Me” on YouTube. Raw and unpolished, the track carried an emotional depth that hinted at the voice he would later become.

His major breakthrough came in 2022 with “Kwaku the Traveller,” a song that topped both local and international charts and propelled him into continental prominence, establishing him as one of Africa’s most compelling new-generation artistes.

Since then, Black Sherif has remained a constant figure in the Artiste of the Year conversation, consistently earning nominations and reinforcing his place among Ghana’s elite performers.
